OUR PONIES AND HORSES

Tui’s Enya
Born on the 21st January 1997 a Registered Part Bred Morgan, 14hh and bright bay with a small white star and one white sock, she competed at the National Morgan Show in 2007 being placed in led and ridden classes with one of our riders and is now competing in local unaffiliated dressage competitions with the same rider.  She is a pony with a strong personality and lots of energy who enjoys plenty of attention.  Enya is ridden by our more confident balanced riders who benefit from her quick stride and lively nature.

Nugget
A bay gelding 14hh with a lovely white star who was born a wild Kaimanawa pony 9 years ago he is becoming a firm favourite with all Hastings RDA riders and volunteers for his cheeky friendly nature, he loves playing with our riders games and provides lots of laughs.  He has a long career ahead of him with RDA and hopefully competing at shows with our riders, he is now starting to jump with some of our adult disabled riders and is used to teach volunteers how to lunge.

Huia
This 14.1hh bay mare is not admitting her age and she certainly doesn’t act it, although she does have a few white hairs, Huia started her life as a “full wire” hunting pony, followed by a stint as an “Aunty” to young TB racehorses in the paddocks and on the track.  She was donated to us by local trainer Davy Jones when he retired.  Huia loves going to the Hawke’s Bay A&P Show, appearing in public generally and having her photo taken, she has a talent for ignoring electric fences and escaping to find the best grazing.  She is used for our youngest and most vulnerable clients.

Milo
This very attractive 19 year old 14.2hh mouse coloured bay gelding with a white blaze and sock, came to us from Wairoa where he had been a much loved Pony Club mount for 6 years for the Manson family, before that he had been a drovers pony.  Good in traffic and generally unflappable he is a great RDA pony and is happy for his rider to sit facing backwards or sideways, for our more able riders he is happy to show off his lovely elevated trot and smooth canter.  He was the star of the Hawke’s Bay Show in 2007; the judges loved him nearly as much as we do.

Choco
This sweet 13.2hh dark bay mare with no white markings who is now 17 years old was purchased in May from Vicky McKay of Hastings.  Already a firm favourite with volunteers and riders for her perfect manners she is already being used with some of our more profoundly disabled riders and her narrow build and smooth stride make her comfortable and easy for them to sit on.  Choco has competed at Pony Club level in the past and her vast experience shows in her wonderful relaxed attitude to all situations. She has at some time in the past lost the tip of her right ear which makes her very distinctive – we would love to know how that happened.

Gypsy
Purchased by Hastings Group Riding for the Disabled in June 2006 from Lesley Lowe of Tauranga this 14.2hh 11 year old bay mare, with a lovely white blaze is a great addition to our team.  Her narrow build makes her ideal for wheelchair bound riders who suffer with tight or stiff leg muscles.  After being a Pony Club mount Gypsy thinks Riding for Disabled therapeutic riding work is very easy.  She loves all the fuss and attention that she gets and particularly enjoyed all the trimming, grooming and tail washing she had during the school vaction.  She does occasionally remind us of her previous talents, when her breakfast is late she jumps out of her paddock and puts herself in her stall to hurry us up.
