NEWSLETTER TERM 3 2010

Riders
Time to plan ahead for Term 4 2010 who would like to represent Hastings Group Riding for the Disabled at the Hawke’s Bay Show, Riding for the Disabled classes will be on Wednesday 20th October starting at 9.00am.  If you would like to take part please fill in the form at the end of the Newsletter and return it and subject to the availability of a suitable pony we make the entries for our riders.  This is a great day and a chance to see our riders having great fun competing against Napier RDA.We all hope we are going to have better weather in Term 3 and not miss any riding days wrap up warm and get to RDA in plenty of time for your ride please.

Ponies
The very wet weather hasn’t been much fun for the ponies but luckily Endeavour Community Trust gave us money to buy them all new winter rugs and the manufacturer Zilco were very generous so they are warm and dry and Mountrath Charitable Trust, L I Redshaw, Heretaunga Building Society, N G Wall and our anonymous volunteer have all renewed their Horse Sponsorships and been joined by Hastings District Masonic Trust who also generously funded a Wintec Wide saddle, many thanks to Wintec for providing a saddle blanket, stirrups, leathers and a girth – a huge thank you to Lesley Taplin at Forbes & Co in Hastings for going the extra mile for us with our rugs and saddle, I know there are more sponsors who are going to renew and we are looking for new Sponsors for Petra and Gypsy as all of the ponies are needing lots of extra hay due to the cold wet weather.

Thank you also to Sarah Massingham Horse Physiotherapist and Sarah Linton Saddle Fitter for the time they have given to Hastings RDA your help and advice is greatly appreciated by the ponies and the RDA team.  Thank you also to our new farrier Anthony Lawrence of Performance Horseshoeing for your time and effort with the ponies.

Fundraising
Hastings Group Riding for the Disabled held a Fund Raising Sausage Sizzle at Mitre 10 Mega in Hastings on Saturday 17th July our thanks go to our wonderful volunteers for giving up their time to raise money for the Group.

Hastings Group Riding for the Disabled would like to say thank you to all who have made donations during the last Term which enable us to continue to provide therapeutic riding:-

Lion Foundation – for their grant towards the wages of our Assistant Programme Co-ordinator

Kiwifirst – a big thank you to all who have made Telephone donations

John Holt Memorial Trust – an unexpected and highly appreciated windfall from the Hall of Fame dinner at Horse of the Year Show

Holcim New Zealand Ltd – for their generous sponsorship of the repair and painting of our arena walls (just waiting for some good weather to start this project),

Salvare Estate Winery (403 Ngatarawa Road, Bridge Pa) – for funds raised at their Art and Crafts in the Vines Day and for keeping a donation bucket on their free wine tastings bar

Lioness Club of Havelock North- thank you for your continued support

Kingdom Foundation – for a generous donation towards the cost of a kitchen in the new Clubhouse

Megan Harvey – for a generous donation towards the Clubhouse Building Fund

The Clubhouse Building
Huge progress has been made with the Clubhouse Building and it has been fantastic watching the rooms appear, Barry Simmons our Project Manager has done great work organising everybody.  There is still some way to go to finish off and furnish ready to start using this wonderful facility but the good news is we no longer have to cancel riding due to the building site as not only is most of the work now inside the building but the ponies now are happy to listen to nail guns, sheets of tin being cut and all the other building site sounds, in fact they quite enjoy watching.  Little Miss our resident miniature horse has tried to go and visit the builders and Huia has been seen admiring her reflection in the windows.

Volunteers, Coaches & Training
Ruth, Heather, Sharon and Jill have just attended a wonderful Coaching Seminar held by NZRDA with International RDA Coach Mary Longden and members of the NZRDA Coaching Team.  We have come back to Hastings RDA with some new ideas but also secure in the knowledge that we are providing safe and effective coaching for our clients.  Jill will be embarking on the NZRDA Coaches course in the near future to become a qualified New Zealand Equestrian Coach for the Disabled she already brings her experience from volunteering with Taupo RDA and her training with the BHS.  In the next 12 months there will be several training courses run locally giving an insight into volunteering at Riding for the Disabled the different roles and care of the ponies as well as courses in the North and South Island leading to Coaching qualifications.  If you are interested or know somebody who would love to volunteer and gain experience please let us know.

Kind Regards
